Why did not Founding Fathers exclude "hate speech" from the First Amendment - there was plenty of vitriol then?

they understood that no matter how hot tempers got, free speech is the cornerstone of a representative gov't. any attempt to stifle debate is is an attempt to silence opposition, period.
