Compare and contrast the influence of Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton in shaping the national identity?
We're probably a lot closer to what Alexander Hamilton wanted for the United States than what Tom Jefferson wanted. Jefferson wanted his country to be a land of plantations. He supported the interests of agriculture while Hamilton supported the interests of industry and commerce. Hamilton, who was Secretary of the Treasury, wanted to establish a national bank, while Jefferson, who was Secretary of State, was opposed to it because he thought that it would hurt the farmers. Hamilton wanted power to be in the federal government and was one of the leaders of the Federalists. While Jefferson was one of the leaders of the anti-federalists or Democratic-Republicans, who wanted power vested in the individual states. They feared a too powerful national government. Jefferson thought that the federal government should assume only the powers expressly given to it by the Constitution, while Hamilton thought that the federal government could assume all powers not expressly denied to it in the Constitution. In international politics, Hamilton wanted the newly created American republic to have a close relationship with Great Britain, while Jefferson wanted the new country to side with France, her enemy. The two men detested each other and their differences and personal feud led to the founding of the first political parties. I hope that this has been a help to you.
